Chronology of
ביתא ישראל
BETA YISRAʾEL

ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL preserved a Jewish religious civilization in Ethiopia through long separation from most other communities of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL. This chronology follows three connected histories: the community's distinctive calendar, the modern process of mutual recognition with other יהודים YEHUDIM, and the difficult movement from Ethiopia through Sudan to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL.
Which holidays preserve the calendar of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL?
Baal Maarar, currently placed on 12 Sivan, preserves the שבועות ŜAVUʾOT tradition of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL.
י״ב בסיון 12th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan: Baal Maarar, currently placed on 12 Sivan, preserves the שבועות ŜAVUʾOT tradition of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL. The existence of the festival is well established, but TJD has not yet verified the encoded day.
A holiday concerning אברהם AVRAHAM, יצחק YIẒḤAK and יעקב YAʾAKOV, currently placed on 18 Elul, preserves another distinctive communal observance.
י״ח באלול 18th 𝑜𝑓 Elul: A holiday concerning אברהם AVRAHAM, יצחק YIẒḤAK and יעקב YAʾAKOV, currently placed on 18 Elul, preserves another distinctive communal observance. The exact date also remains unverified.
These records should not present difference as deficiency. The calendar of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL developed within an old Jewish textual and ritual tradition that did not receive every later rabbinic practice adopted elsewhere.
How did mutual recognition develop?
On 28 Iyar AM 5731, leaders among ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL acknowledged the authority of the chief רב RAV (rabbi) for ספרדים SEFARADIM.
כ״ח באייר ה׳תשל״א 28th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5731: On 28 Iyar AM 5731, leaders among ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL acknowledged the authority of the chief רב RAV (rabbi) for ספרדים SEFARADIM. The surviving letter helped establish a relationship in which both communities could work toward recognition and עלייה ALIYA.
In 1973, ר׳ עובדיה יוסף R. OVADʾYA YOSEF ruled that ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL were יהודים YEHUDIM.
In 1973, ר׳ עובדיה יוסף R. OVADʾYA YOSEF ruled that ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL were יהודים YEHUDIM. TJD's earlier hub linked this ruling to a nonexistent standalone article and assigned it an unverified 7 Adar I date. The ruling remains essential to the chronology, but it should not receive a numbered Hebrew day until a dated primary document is located.1
On 29 Nisan AM 5735, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL applied the Right of Return to ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL.
כ״ט בניסן ה׳תשל״ה 29th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5735: On 29 Nisan AM 5735, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL applied the Right of Return to ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL. The linked record preserves the present TJD placement while its exact calendar date remains under review.2
Recognition was not one decision made by outsiders about a passive community. It developed through religious rulings, letters from leaders among ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL, advocacy by members of the community and their allies, and political decisions by מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL.
How did rescue and עלייה ALIYA reshape the community?
Thousands of people left Ethiopia through dangerous routes, particularly through Sudan. Hunger, disease, violence and the hazards of clandestine movement killed many before they could reach מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. Later airlifts brought large parts of the community home in concentrated rescue operations.
On 11 Sivan AM 5751, Operation Solomon began airlifting ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL.
י״א בסיון ה׳תשנ״א 11th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5751: On 11 Sivan AM 5751, Operation Solomon began airlifting ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. Over roughly thirty-six hours, the operation carried more than fourteen thousand people from Addis Ababa.3
On 28 Iyar, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL commemorates members of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL who died on the journey.
כ״ח באייר 28th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar: On 28 Iyar, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL commemorates members of ביתא ישראל BETA YISRAʾEL who died on the journey. The memorial date coincides with יום ירושלים YOM YERUŜALAYIM, joining their deaths on the road with the communal longing for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM expressed through סיגד SIGD.4
What discrimination continued after עלייה ALIYA?
Arrival did not end exclusion. Questions about conversion, marriage, education, housing and the treatment of blood donations exposed the gap between formal recognition and equal treatment.
On 7 Ŝevat AM 5756, Maariv reported that blood donated by Ethiopian immigrants had been secretly destroyed.
ז׳ בשבט ה׳תשנ״ו 7th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5756: On 7 Ŝevat AM 5756, Maariv reported that blood donated by Ethiopian immigrants had been secretly destroyed. The disclosure provoked a major protest. TJD retains the event in this chronology while the linked article's precise Hebrew date and sourcing remain under review.
This later history belongs beside the story of rescue. עלייה ALIYA restored a separated Jewish community to direct life with much of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL, but it also required institutions of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL to confront prejudice and unequal treatment within the Jewish national home.
How certain are these dates?
The recurring date of סיגד SIGD, the 28 Iyar memorial and the beginning of Operation Solomon have strong calendar support. The precise days assigned to Baal Maarar, the patriarchs holiday, the Right of Return decision and the blood-donation disclosure require further verification. The chronology links those records so that their historical relationship remains visible without treating every inherited date as equally secure.
