Chronology of
יהודים YEHUDIM in the
Byzantine–Sassanian war

The last great war between the Byzantine and Sassanian empires transformed ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL in the early seventh century. Some יהודים YEHUDIM supported the Sassanian advance to escape Byzantine persecution and return to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. The alliance opened possibilities for national restoration, but imperial permission remained revocable: Sassanian rulers later withdrew their support.¹

Resistance and the advance

The Byzantine Empire joined imperial triumphalism to Christian supersessionism. Exclusion of יהודים YEHUDIM from ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM made Christian possession of the city a visible claim that Christianity had displaced יהדות YAHADUT. Supporting the empire’s enemy offered a way to challenge both political subordination and religious humiliation. It was a strategy for restoration, not evidence that Sassanian rulers guaranteed tolerance.²

The uprising at Antioch, dated to 609 CE by Judith Herrin, followed attempts by Emperor Phocas to force יהודים YEHUDIM into Christianity. Its inherited placement in אלול ד׳ש״ע Elul, AM 4370 is not established.³

The reported attack on Tyre: Eutychius describes an attempted attack by forces of יהודים YEHUDIM and the killing of hostages from the local community by Christian defenders. Carlos Martínez Carrasco reconstructs the episode in spring 614, before the taking of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM; the late narrative remains disputed.⁴

Sassanian advance and reversal

The taking of the city broke centuries of Christian imperial control. Allies among יהודים YEHUDIM gained influence, while texts including ספר זרבבל SEFER ZERUBAVEL placed hopes of restoration within an urgent messianic narrative. The extent and duration of administration by יהודים YEHUDIM remain disputed; an opening under Sassanian occupation was not secure national sovereignty.⁷

Christian accounts treated the loss of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM as a religious catastrophe. Strategos described massacres and assigned an especially violent role to יהודים YEHUDIM. His polemic, complicated textual transmission and casualty figures require criticism, not automatic acceptance.⁸ Archaeology supports destruction at particular sites but complicates claims of uniform devastation. Evidence of violence does not independently establish every accusation about who committed it.⁹

By the eve of the invasion of Egypt in 618–619, Sassanian authorities had shifted support toward Christians and withdrawn privileges from יהודים YEHUDIM. The alliance had not transferred final political authority. The power to permit restoration remained the power to stop it.¹⁰

Byzantine return

The war exhausted both empires. Peace reversed Sassanian territorial gains, but imperial recovery did not mean safety for יהודים YEHUDIM. Restoring Christian possession of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM also revived accusations that resistance to Byzantine rule constituted betrayal.¹¹

Eutychius’s later account of the broken amnesty depicts local Christians and monks persuading Heraclius to authorize massacres of יהודים YEHUDIM, promising religious absolution for breaking his oath. This is evidence of a Christian justification for killing, not independent confirmation of every reported act or the inherited י״ח באדר 18th 𝑜𝑓 Adar placement.¹³

The next imperial transition belongs to the chronology of early Islam. The Arab Empire entered a region weakened by war, where possession of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM already carried competing claims of sacred authority. Another change of ruler did not resolve the struggle by יהודים YEHUDIM for return and self-determination.¹⁴
