מגנוס הירשפלד MAGNUS HIRŜFELD, the German Jewish physician and sexual reformer, died in Nice while living in exile. His work joined medical investigation to campaigns against the criminalization and persecution of sexual minorities. His death followed the Nazi destruction of the institution he had built in Berlin.1
What did Nazi persecution destroy?
USHMM describes Hirschfeld's motto as:
through science to justice2
That formulation made research a means of challenging persecution. In May 1933, Nazi students and SA members looted his Institute for Sexual Science; stolen books and records were burned, and the institute was forced to close. Nazi attacks targeted his Jewish identity as well as his research and advocacy. The destruction struck an institution, its accumulated knowledge and the people who depended on its work.3
USHMM's historical assessment calls him:
an early pioneer of the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.4
His pioneering work does not establish an absolute claim to be the first modern champion. The distinction matters: pioneering work can be recognized without erasing predecessors or collapsing historical categories into present-day terminology. His surviving publications and the institute's destruction provide evidence for his work and its enemies; a claim of absolute priority would require a separate comparative history.
His birth on 22 Iyar 5628 is recorded separately.
How is this dated?
Berlin's official commemorative account dates his death in Nice to 14 May 1935. That Gregorian date converts to י״א באייר ה׳תרצ״ה 11th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5695, matching the calendar. USHMM corroborates his death in Nice in 1935. This article records his death; the fact that it fell on his civil birthday does not combine the two events.567
Guided reflections
- What was lost when the Nazis destroyed the institute’s books and patient records, beyond the physical building?
- How does Hirschfeld’s Jewish identity change an account concerned only with his place in sexual-reform history?
