BEʾER SEVA from Egyptian military control on The נגב NEGEV brigade fought into the city, which served as an Egyptian logistical center. The retrospective account of צה״ל ẒAHAL describes an attack beginning at 4 a.m., fighting through the morning and an Egyptian surrender.1

What did דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION know during the battle?

At 9 a.m., דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION still lacked a direct report from the front. His diary describes enemy reports of street fighting and treats Israeli control of the city, or part of it, as provisional. In the account of the government meeting called for noon, uncertainty has given way to a report of success. The archive's עברית IVRIT (Hebrew) transcription includes:

ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ:

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

and that meanwhile we had succeeded in capturing Beersheba.2

The sequence distinguishes preliminary information from the government's later confirmation. DAVID BEN-GURION also anticipated an Egyptian counterattack. The entry's closing passage reports about seventy prisoners and envisages demolishing most buildings while fortifying government and police buildings. It records a contemplated measure; this passage alone does not establish how much demolition followed or explain the fate of the civilian population.3

Why did the approaching ceasefire matter?

Historian Elhanan Oren places the battle within Operation Yoav and Israel's effort to gain time before a new ceasefire. His assessment is:

ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ:

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

But the dwindling time was used to capture Beersheba.4

Oren's account links the military opportunity to the diplomatic timetable. The day's victory established Israeli control of the city while fighting and political pressure continued elsewhere.5

How do the casualty reports and civilian outcomes differ?

The October 22 diary reports eight killed and twenty-five wounded at באר שבע BEʾER SEVA, while the later military account supplied with this batch gives six killed and twenty-one wounded. The latter PDF could not be recovered in this pass; its figures remain mediated through the supplied report. The discrepancy may reflect reporting stages or scope, but no nominal roll has settled it. The two counts must not be added. 6

The memorial for משה Weiss MOŜE identifies a soldier wounded in this battle who died on October 21. His biography connects service with immigration from Hungary in 1946. It does not establish that he was the last survivor of his family. His name is an individual lead, not a complete roll of the battle dead. 7

The supplied report identifies civilian flight before the attack and subsequent expulsion of remaining residents, including later measures on October 25. The original civilian case files and the full scholarly passages are not collated here. Those later measures cannot be assigned automatically to October 21 or replaced by a claim that everyone had already left voluntarily. The diary’s plans and battlefield report do not themselves establish a household displacement total.

How is this dated?

The placement is י״ח בתשרי ה׳תש״ט 18th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. The civil battle date is October 21, 1948; the confirmed morning timing does not support moving it to the next Hebrew date, 19th 𝑜𝑓 Tiŝrei, AM 5709. The Defense Ministry's memorial biography of Yaakov-Azriel Shulman explicitly gives that Ivrit date for his death during the battle. BenGurion's dated diary records the victory during daylight, and the account of צה״ל ẒAHAL supplies the morning battle sequence. Together these support the existing day placement without relying only on a calendar conversion.8

Guided reflections

  • What changes between דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION’s uncertain morning information and his report to the government at noon?
  • What further evidence would distinguish the diary's demolition plan from what happened to buildings and civilians in באר שבע BEʾER SEVA?
