Davar's 5 June 1967 front page led with the Israeli government's concern about the pace of foreign diplomacy. The heading above the main headline identified the cabinet as the source of the warning. The report belongs to the crisis as readers encountered it that morning, before the day's outcome was known. Davar was the Histadrut's newspaper; its page records a particular institutional presentation of the crisis.1

The introductory heading makes the source of the alarm explicit:

ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ:

הממשלה מתריעה בישיבתה

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

The government warns at its meeting.2

The language makes waiting an active political problem. For a state facing a maritime blockade and hostile forces, delay could consume the time available for protecting its population. The newspaper does not, by itself, establish that every diplomatic option had been exhausted. It shows how the government's impatience was placed before Hebrew readers.

The documentary record preserves the stakes behind that concern. In a 30 May message to President Lyndon B. Johnson, לוי אשכול LEVI ESHKOL had presented the closure of the Strait of Tiran and the regional military buildup as threats requiring urgent action. That message establishes his government's stated case; it does not turn the newspaper's alarm into an independent assessment of every foreign government's intentions.3

How is this dated?

The NLI issue record and the inspected front page date this report to 5 June 1967, corresponding to 26 Iyar 5727 in the fixed Hebrew calendar. This is the publication date, not a claim that the cabinet meeting occurred that morning.4

Guided reflections

  • What evidence would distinguish diplomatic delay from the failure of diplomacy?
  • How does identifying the government as the warning's source affect the way readers should assess it?
