ר׳ חנן R. ḤANAN is remembered for restoring the academy at פומבדיתא PUMBEDITA after persecution had displaced its teachers. The reference account places the reopening in 589 CE and connects it with relief from restrictions imposed under Hormizd IV. The restoration recovered an institution through which יהודים YEHUDIM maintained teaching and authority in בבל BAVEL. 1

Why distinguish the restoration from his death?

The entry ends ר׳ חנן R. ḤANAN’s rectorate in 608. The separate entry on ר׳ מרי R. MARI dates his succession after ר׳ חנן R. ḤANAN’s death to 609. These are different reconstructed endpoints. They should not be silently reconciled into a precise death anniversary. 2 3

The reference account also records disagreement over whether ר׳ חנן R. ḤANAN belongs to the last teachers of the preceding period or inaugurates the era of the גאונים GEONIM. Institutional succession and period labels require separate judgments. The underlying chronological texts have not been independently collated here, and no absolute עברית IVRIT calendar placement is assigned. 4

Guided reflections

  • What changes when the reopening of an academy, rather than an estimated death, anchors its leader’s biography?
  • What evidence could reconcile the two reference accounts’ different endpoints?
