Mahmut Kaya identifies מסרג׳ויה MASARJAWAIH as a physician and translator associated with the Umayyad period. His account describes the Arabic translation of Ahron’s medical compilation from an earlier Syriac version and places מסרג׳ויה MASARJAWAIH’s activity in Marwan ibn al-Hakam’s reign. The transmission preserves the contribution of a practitioner of יהדות YAHADUT to medical learning across languages. 1

Why must similar names remain distinct?

Kaya records differing accounts of מסרג׳ויה MASARJAWAIH’s background and notes chronological problems in stories attached to him. Levent Öztürk and Samet Şenel’s research-article abstract separately identifies a later conflation. It distinguishes Ibn Juljul’s Umayyad-era Māsarjawayh from al-Nadim’s Abbasid-era Māsarjīs, while explaining that later authors often combined the two. The abstract establishes the study’s question and source comparison; its full argument has not been collated here. 2 3

Kaya dates Marwan’s reign to 684 and 685 CE. A reign provides a window for the reported activity, not a precise day of translation. The underlying biographical witnesses and the full modern study need comparison before combining works, dates or personal identities. No birth, death or exact עברית IVRIT calendar placement is assigned. 4

Guided reflections

  • What is lost when the transmission of medical learning is described without naming its translator and language chain?
  • How could combining two similar names produce an impossible career?
