The Templer communal chronology places the beginnings of a settlement in the Rephaim area of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM in 1873. This was the German Templer community, distinct from the American Colony associated with the Spaffords.

Keeping those institutions separate prevents the broad label “Christian colony” from erasing differences in origin and organization. The entry concerns the creation of a residential community in the homeland’s capital; it does not establish that the two Christian projects had a single leadership, arrival or purpose.

How is this dated?

The source gives 1873 for the settlement’s beginnings, corresponding to AM 5633–5634. It supplies no founding day. Other Templer moves and institutional events must not fill that gap merely because their dates are more precise. The supported anchor remains a civil year, without a unique Hebrew-year placement.

Guided reflections

  • Why must the Templer settlement and the American Colony remain separate in the history of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?
  • What source would turn a general beginning-year into a particular founding act?
