A governing-party report transcribed by Aydoğan describes pressure on יהודים YEHUDIM to leave Tekirdağ. It records threats, distressed efforts to dispose of property and encounters with officials during the regional pogrom. The report is an institutional participant's account of coercion, not a neutral record of voluntary migration. 1

Why does the report require critical reading?

Its attempt to explain the role of party officials must be distinguished from independently established responsibility. An official's denial of participation cannot settle that question. The report can establish what its author represented to superiors; corroborating testimony is needed to assess omissions, particular acts and enforcement. 2

The printed datelines contain a material conflict:

“3 Temmuz 934 Pazartesi”

“5 Temmuz 934 Çarşamba”

They pair 3 July with Monday and 5 July with Wednesday. In 1934 those days were Tuesday and Thursday. The weekday pair fits the preceding year, but that is not sufficient evidence to change the year of a report concerning the pogrom. The original document needs collation before these local developments receive exact calendar placements. 3

Guided reflections

  • How might an institutional author’s explanation of responsibility shape what the report includes or omits?
  • What features of the original document could resolve the conflicting datelines?
