In the autumn of the following year, the great offensive began, in which the Arab troops under Faisal faced the greater part of the Ottoman forces. After Allenby had broken through the Ottoman lines, the resistance collapsed. The Ottoman retreat turned into a flight, from which only the few German cadres stood out, cadres to whom Lawrence pays such eloquent tribute.

On the evening of September 30, 1918, the first Arab troops entered jubilant Damascus, the capital of Syria. The next day, the first small detachment of the English army followed. Two days later, Allenby and Faisal reached the city from different directions, the city that would presumably also become the capital of the new Arab state.
