THE FIGHTER

Immediately after the entry into Damascus, the first Arab government was formed. When Schukri Pasha Al-Ayyubi sought to establish that government’s authority in Beirut, he met French resistance and had to abandon the city. The English troops withdrew from the areas around Damascus and Aleppo and left that territory to the newly formed government. They remained in Iraq and Palestine.

Events now took a dramatic turn. While Faisal formed his government, Arab parties organized themselves, an Arab National Congress met in Damascus, and the Allied powers in Europe began dividing the spoils of war, representatives of the Zionist organizations settled themselves in Palestine with suitcases full of plans and available funds. The Arab people only gradually came to understand the situation in which they found themselves.

Their daily experience proved that the struggle for freedom had not ended but had in fact only begun. While the Egyptians rose as one in revolutionary struggle against England to compel fulfillment of the promise of freedom, armed conflicts also broke out in Palestine. The young Amin Al-Husseini was among the first to use his military experience to organize the rural population into combat groups.
