[Qutb's text — collated Arabic] سباق إلى التضحية والفداء هذا الشباب الذي يتزاحم على أبواب الأحزاب والهيئات في هذه الأيام كما يتدافع السيل وراء السدود .. على أي شيء يتزاحم وإلى أي مغنم يقصد ؟ وماذا هنالك وراء الزحام والسباق ؟ لقد رأيت هذا الشباب ، رأيته في كل مكان رأيته يتدافع ويتزاحم حتى يتساقط حاجز السُلّم تحت ضغط المئات والألوف . ورأيته في دار المركز العام لجمعيات الشبان المسلمين صفوفاً وراء صفوف ، تنتظر وتتململ وقد طال بها الانتظار . أما دور الاخوان المسلمين فلها نظامها الخاص في استقبال الشباب وتدريب الشباب وهي تزخر بالقدامى والمحدثين فيهم في هذه الأيام . على أي شيء يتزاحم هذا الشباب ، وإلى أي مغنم يقصد وماذا هنالك وراء الزحام والسباق ؟ إنه لا يتزاحم على عرض من أعراض الدنيا إنه لا يقصد مغنماً من مغانم الأرض ، إنه لا يتسابق إلى حفل أو عرس . انه يتزاحم على الموت ويقصد إلى التضحية ويتسابق إلى الفداء . إنه يلبي داعي الوطن في ساعة العسرة وهتاف الحرية في المعركة الكبرى ونداء الواجب في أحرج الظروف .

[Sayyid Qutb] A Race toward Sacrifice and Redemption

This youth that crowds at the doors of parties and organizations these days as a flood surges behind dams, what is it crowding toward, and what prize does it seek? What lies behind the crowding and the race?

I have seen this youth. I have seen it everywhere, surging and crowding until the stairway barrier collapses under the pressure of hundreds and thousands.

I saw it at the headquarters of the General Center of Young Men's Muslim Associations, row after row, waiting and growing restless as the wait lengthened.

The Muslim Brotherhood centers have their own system for receiving and training young people, and these days they overflow with veterans and newcomers.

What is this youth crowding toward, and what prize does it seek? What lies behind the crowding and the race?

It is not crowding toward any worldly possession. It does not seek any earthly gain. It is not racing to a celebration or wedding. It crowds toward death, seeks sacrifice, and races toward redemption.

It answers the homeland's call in the hour of hardship, freedom's cry in the great battle, and duty's summons in the most critical circumstances.
