History does not establish that anyone dispersed the Jews before 70 CE or forced them to leave Palestine. It is certain, however, that they lived comfortably in Corinth, Rome and Alexandria. Just as they spread in the west, they also turned eastward, going to Khurasan, Turkestan, distant China, Cochin and the Malabar Coast. They formed communities whose existence before the Christian era is said to have been established.

Not all Jews left Palestine. A group remained, known as the Samaritans. This group conducted its Jewish affairs secretly. The Romans were uneasy about secret associations operating alongside the government. Mussolini followed their example by refusing to allow secret associations to remain in Italy and dissolved the Freemasons' lodges. The Nazi Party likewise forbade its members from joining them, fearing that the Jews, through the organization of their secret association, would attack the government. But they supposedly overlooked that Jews, although dispersed throughout the world, are joined by a strong bond: "Every circumcised Jew must perform his duty and his part in raising the Jewish people and must marry only the daughter of a circumcised man."

The Jews' dispersion throughout the world was accompanied by a great decline, and one no longer heard of the courage of the Jewish Maccabees, whose fame spread in 134 and 135 BCE
