On 14 April 1948, the provisional government's structure was announced while national forces continued costly fighting. A failed counterattack near רמת יוחנן RAMAT YOHANAN killed defenders including זוהר דיין ZOHAR DAYAN. Parliamentary exchanges also exposed the difference between available food and the ability to bring it to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM.

What was announced about government?

The contemporary dispatch describes a thirteen-member cabinet within a thirty-seven-member representative authority and claimed appointments for a civil administration. Announcement of the provisional government of יהודים YEHUDIM. explains why these were preparations for sovereignty rather than a declaration of independence. The preceding committee decision is assigned to 13 April, separate from publication.1

What did the counterattack cost?

The military history places the Carmeli counterattack around 16:00. The force failed to take its objective. The official memorial of זוהר דיין ZOHAR DAYAN records three defenders killed and identifies his wife and son among the family he left behind. Preliminary reports use changing casualty scopes, so they are not added to the memorial total.2 3

The engagement belongs within The Battle of רמת יוחנן RAMAT YOHANAN began.; a separate standalone article is not created simply for one participant's death. The daily account preserves his individual life and the battle's consequences.

What did Parliament establish about supplies and weapons?

The minister's written answer distinguished food availability from dangerous road transport to the city. The final section of the road remained especially difficult. The answer is an official account of conditions, not proof every neighborhood had adequate food.4

A separate arms question was asked by Janner, not a person named Maurice Edelman Janner. The minister said the government had no supporting information for the alleged use of imperial 25-pounder artillery. A question does not prove its premise, and that answer does not identify every weapon's origin.5

What was happening in the other northern city?

The scholarly study places an imperial curfew in טבריה TEVERIYA on 14 April but finds it ineffectively enforced. Fighting and reinforcement continued. Its issued order and failure to halt violence are distinct claims, with the original log still needed for exact timings.6

How is this dated?

This is Day 137 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-14, counted from 30 November 1947, using the daytime conversion ה׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 5th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The route dates the rundown, not every incident mentioned. Occurrence dates, later reportage and retrospective publication are distinguished in each section and linked study. The counterattack is reported around 16:00 on 14 April. The public announcement lacks an independently fixed hour; its 13 April decision is distinct. Parliamentary acts in London lack a local-to-Jerusalem hour comparison here. After sunset on this civil date, the adjacent Hebrew route is ו׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 6th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708; the daily slot does not assign every described act to its daytime route. This uses the fixed Hebrew calendar’s daytime conversion; occurrence precision and sunset alternatives remain as stated.7

Guided reflections

  • How did national defense and civilian survival intersect in this day’s developments?
  • Which claims depend on direct observation, later reconstruction or a transmitted report?
  • How does separating occurrence, publication and sunset dates change the account?
