Imperial forces withdrew from צפת ẒEFAT on 16 April 1948. National defenders fought to retain the threatened quarter, while troops of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA held positions around הושה HOSHA and כסאיר KHUSAYR against counterattacks. In טבריה TEVERIYA, a separate attack on a house killed Arab civilians.
What did the withdrawal leave behind?
The later accounts place the departure from צפת ẒEFAT around 15:00. Important vacated positions overlooking the quarter of יהודים YEHUDIM passed into Arab hands. Civilian representatives and national commanders disagreed about a proposed evacuation of women and children. Imperial forces withdrew from צפת ẒEFAT. preserves both the reported morning agreement and later rejection, without asserting that the proposed movement occurred.1 2
What happened in the continuing battle?
Following overnight attacks, national forces captured positions near רמת יוחנן RAMAT YOHANAN and held against repeated assaults. The later study gives approximately 06:00 for one capture, while translated Arab-channel reports contain incompatible hours. Their result is clearer than every minute of the sequence.3
The commander's report dated 17 April gave twenty-four killed and forty-two wounded over the operation, excluding local volunteers. It is not a 16 April death count. The Battle of רמת יוחנן RAMAT YOHANAN began. preserves the reporting scope and distinctions among the participating formations.
Who was killed in the house attack?
The scholarly study reports fourteen civilians, including children, killed when a platoon from יבנאל YAVNIEL attacked a house on intelligence of an Arab meeting. ההגנה HAʾHAGANA attacked a house, killing Arab civilians. treats the premise and the people harmed separately. A suspected meeting does not establish the victims as fourteen armed fighters.4
Which overnight operation crosses the Hebrew boundary?
The renewed attack on ساريس SARIS began during 16–17 April. The institutional history says residents were driven out and houses demolished. The successful operation belongs to ח׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 8th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708 if, as described, it began after sunset on 16 April; it is covered in פלמ״ח PALMAḤ captured ساريس SARIS and destroyed houses. and the next daily slot as well.5 6
The shared civil date did not give all operations the same purpose or target. Successful defense, forcible removal and civilian killing must remain tied to their actual actors and evidence.
How is this dated?
This is Day 139 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-16, counted from 30 November 1947, using the daytime conversion ז׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The route dates the rundown, not every incident mentioned. Occurrence dates, later reportage and retrospective publication are distinguished in each section and linked study. The approximately 15:00 imperial departure and morning captures fall on 7 Nisan. The house attack lacks a secure hour. The renewed road assault after sunset on 16 April belongs to 8 Nisan. After sunset on this civil date, the adjacent Hebrew route is ח׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 8th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708; the daily slot does not assign every described act to its daytime route. This uses the fixed Hebrew calendar’s daytime conversion; occurrence precision and sunset alternatives remain as stated.7
