This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.
What changed in טבריה TEVERIYA?
The Arab community was evacuated under imperial escort after the preceding offensive. The morning conference, bus arrangements and reported completion that evening are reconstructed from records reproduced by Abbasi. His cited log says:
Operation completed by 181835B without further incident.1
The full Evacuation of the Arab community. distinguishes an organized departure under military pressure from a voluntary household choice, and a public promise of return from actual readmission. JTA reported the announcement on 20 April; its relative wording is not treated as a substitute for the dated log.2
What threatened access around ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?
The institutional history of the following convoy battle records Arab occupation of a former German hospital on Mount Scopus on 18 April and concentrations nearby. The city commander sought reinforcements before imperial positions were vacated. These are later military reconstructions, not newly inspected occupancy or civilian evacuation records.3
Reports of a food convoy arriving during this period differ in their arrival dates and vehicle numbers. The 19 April JTA dispatch calls the arrival the previous day, while other histories date the preceding convoy differently. This may concern reporting stages or different journeys; no merger is inferred. The clearly distinct 20 April battle has its own study.
What can be counted for this day?
The evacuation changed a whole community's relationship to its homes, while institutions of יהודים YEHUDIM consolidated military and municipal control. Community population estimates do not establish the number carried on buses on 18 April. No audited combined casualty or displacement increment is available for this day.
How is this dated?
This is Day 141 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-18. The public Ivrit route is ט׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 10th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route. The evacuation completion notation 18:35B requires a separate local sunset and clock check.
Guided reflections
- How does imperial transport change the mechanism, rather than the cause, of evacuation?
- Which record could test whether the promise of return to the city was honored?
