This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.
How did the settlement resist?
Arab forces assaulted נווה יעקב NEVE YAAKOV north of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. JTA reported two attacks repelled and an armored vehicle destroyed. Its same-day headline reads:
Haganah Repulses Two Attacks in Jerusalem Area; Poale Mizrachi Settlement Safe.1
The Arab forces attacked נווה יעקב NEVE YAAKOV. separates those contemporary reports from unverified commander attribution and disputed losses. Holding a defended community did not make its approach roads safe.
Which food arrival did the agency report?
The same dispatch reported roughly three hundred trucks arriving the previous day. Its issue date 19 April therefore points to 18 April for that account, whereas institutional histories date earlier supply movements differently. A truck total, an arrival report and the next day's attacked column should not be combined into one uninterrupted journey. Convoy identifiers and original transport logs remain missing.2 3
What did the source not establish?
A derivative compilation cites an imperial file concerning wounded Arab Legion personnel. The original CO 733/477 record has not been inspected. It does not justify converting wounded men into dozens of dead or assigning them all to the settlement assault. Reported losses of nine or eleven remain competing estimates rather than a verified nominal roll.4
The defense preserved a place for יהודים YEHUDIM near the city during a dangerous transition. It establishes an armed event for the day without an invented evacuation order or an unsupported cumulative toll.
How is this dated?
This is Day 142 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-19. The public Ivrit route is י׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ח 10th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י״א בניסן ה׳תש״ח 11th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route.

- Which records would identify the assault’s commander and those killed?
