This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.

Why did a convoy’s arrival conceal a battle?

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION arrived in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM with the front of a supply column. Its rear was attacked near שער הגיא SHAAR HAGAI, where a damaged vehicle blocked the road. The institutional account makes the distinction explicit:

החלק הקדמי של השיירה הגיע במהירות ובבטחה לירושלים

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

The front of the convoy reached Jerusalem quickly and safely.1

The Attack on a supply convoy of יהודים YEHUDIM. compares the diary, later casualty reports and the rescue effort. Safe arrival of some trucks does not erase deaths among those stopped behind them.2 3

How did fighting affect the neighboring Arab village?

Contemporary reporting preserved in the supplied research places an attack around רמת הכובש RAMAT HAKOVESH on 20 April. An institutional account connects the fighting to a decision to remove residents of مسكة MISKA. Morris separately dates an ultimatum to 19 April and departures to 20–21 April. The full Expulsion of Arab residents. preserves that discrepancy and identifies expulsion where an order is documented, without treating every villager as a fighter.4 5 6

Which assault began that night?

Preparations for the second attack on the fortress at النبي يوشع NABI YUSHA belonged to 20 April. The force moved at night and attacked around 03:00 the next morning. Its Second assault on the police fortress failed. is placed with the decisive 21 April phase, while this rundown retains the preparation date. Transport delays, wire barriers and retrieval of wounded men were central in the later military narrative.7

These developments involved different forces, places and casualty reports. Their conjunction in one day does not make their losses one interchangeable total.

How is this dated?

This is Day 143 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-20. The public Ivrit route is י״א בניסן ה׳תש״ח 11th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י״ב בניסן ה׳תש״ח 12th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route.

Guided reflections

  • How can safe arrival at the front coexist with deaths at the rear of a convoy?
  • Why must the village ultimatum and the night assault retain separate dates?
