This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.

How did control change in חיפה HAIFA?

Forces of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA gained control of the Arab districts after fighting that began the previous day. The imperial report describes continuing evacuation through the port while military action was still taking place. Control, civilian flight and later organized departure were connected phases, with different timings and evidence.1

The full event://5708־01־13־jewish־forces־capture־חיפה HAIFA retains the contemporary Arabic report from Al-Jazirah, including its accusation of shelling and its report of local evacuation instructions. It does not treat either newspaper claim as an authenticated original order.

What did the proposed truce promise?

The reproduced terms required disarmament, curfew and removal of all foreign Arab males, a category broader than combatants. They also promised:

ALL PERSONS WILL CARRY ON THEIR WORK AS EQUAL AND FREE CITIZENS OF HAIFA.2

The promise establishes proposed wording, not effective equality. The delegation refused endorsement without protection of its position on jurisdiction and political status, then requested evacuation under threat of renewed attack. JTA's next-day statement of unconditional acceptance therefore conflicts with the reproduced correspondence and scholarly narrative. It is retained as a reporting claim, not a completed signedagreement.3 4

How was an earlier massacre discussed?

The existing event://5708־01־13־הדסה־convoy־editorial HADASSAH is an editorial published on 22 April about the attack on the medical convoy on 13 April. Its publication belongs to this day's record of response; the deaths remain dated to the earlier attack. Newspaper date and event date are not interchangeable.

The unfolding evacuation and subsequent event://5708־01־14־חיפה־martial־law HAIFA require distinct evidence about orders, looting, property safeguards and return. No verified final daily toll can be extracted by adding newspaper estimates to later historical totals.

How is this dated?

This is Day 145 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-22. The public Ivrit route is י״ג בניסן ה׳תש״ח 13th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י״ד בניסן ה׳תש״ח 14th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route.

Guided reflections

  • What does a promise of equal civic work establish before an agreement is accepted?
  • How do flight during the battle and a later organized evacuation differ?
