This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.

What did the failed assault cost?

The attack on النبي صموئيل NABI SAMWIL failed after the preceding night's advance. Preliminary diary reports contradicted one another, including a report of death later corrected to wounding. The Assault on النبي صموئيل NABI SAMWIL failed. compares these with the later total and the eventual identification of a fallen soldier in a collective grave.1 2

How did military control affect civilians?

Martial law was declared in חיפה HAIFA. Letters by the Arab committee dated 23 April requested protection for remaining residents, departing residents' property and religious institutions. Their request for evacuation described imperial refusal to provide protection as a major pressure. The event://5708־01־14־חיפה־martial־law HAIFA keeps these contemporary claims distinct from later concentration and return policy.3

During the night of 22–23 April, forces of גולני GOLANI entered سمخ SAMAKH and then withdrew under imperial intervention. The Attack on سمخ SAMAKH. retains the military history's explicit objective of driving local inhabitants away, without supplying an invented household list.4

Who is recorded at the festival seder?

This places דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION at a soldiers' פסח PESAḤ seder that evening. After sunset the Hebrew date was already 15 Nisan. It does not establish attendance by every fighter or link a particular battlefield death to the ceremony.

How is this dated?

This is Day 146 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-23. The public Ivrit route is י״ד בניסן ה׳תש״ח 14th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is ט״ו בניסן ה׳תש״ח 15th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route. The evening seder already belonged to 15 Nisan; the predawn military operations belonged to 14 Nisan.

Guided reflections

  • How does a named seder attendance differ from an assumed observance across a whole army?
