This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.
How did the festival begin amid fighting?
The daytime Hebrew date was 15 Nisan, the first day of פסח PESAḤ. The preceding evening's diary records דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION at the soldiers' seder at Schneller. That evidence identifies a particular gathering; it does not support inventing an observance for every threatened community or every casualty.1
What happened at the village near חיפה HAIFA?
The later village history places the surrounding of بلد الشيخ BALAD AL-SHAYKH around 05:00 on 24 April. It describes a demand for arms, the surrender of old rifles, a rejected request for truce, fire and imperial assistance in evacuation. The Attack and evacuation of an Arab village. distinguishes prior flight after the port city'sbattle from removal during this operation, and retains 24–25 April as a departure range.2
No new audited fatality count or complete household register has been recovered. Earlier violence at the village in December 1947 must not be counted as April deaths.
What accommodation was discussed for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?
The 25 April diary recounts a meeting with the French consul held the previous day. It transmits proposals involving immigration limits, displaced people in Cyprus and arrangements for the city. A representative of יהודים YEHUDIM rejected the immigration restriction. This is a record of a discussion and attributed proposals, not a completed French-government settlement or an accepted city statute.3
The renewed operation in الشيخ جراح SHEIKH JARRAH followed during the next night. Its Imperial forces intervened against an advance of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA. belongs to 25 April for the predawn advance and intervention. A 24 April dailyaccount can identify preparation without redating the next day's fighting.
How is this dated?
This is Day 147 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-24. The public Ivrit route is ט״ו בניסן ה׳תש״ח 15th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is ט״ז בניסן ה׳תש״ח 16th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route.
Guided reflections
- What evidence would distinguish earlier flight from the next morning’s escorted removal?
- Why does a diplomatic proposal not establish an accepted settlement?
