This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.
How was the future government’s work divided?
The diary assigns portfolios for מנהלת ה עם MINHELET HAʾ AM. Justice, transport, finance, immigration and other responsibilities were being organized while defense and some personnel matters remained unsettled. The Assignment of portfolios for the provisional government. separates this distribution from the earlier formation of the committee.1
The same entry records complaints from חיפה HAIFA about military appointments and administration of Arab property. Civilian objection and proposed corrective orders show a conflict over authority; they do not prove that an instruction was implemented or a confiscation legally reviewed.
What did the General Assembly ask for?
Resolution 185 requested study of protective measures for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Its operative wording was:
Resolves to ask the Trusteeship Council to study, with the Mandatory power and the interested parties, suitable measures for the protection of the city and its inhabitants, and to submit within the shortest possible time proposals to the General Assembly to that effect.2
A request for proposals did not install a governor or secure a ceasefire. It differs from the 21 April transmission of the draft statute and the 23 April trucecommission.
Which reports covered the continuing battles?
The garrison study describes another repelled assault on יפו YAFO. The existing News report titled: Jewish underground defies Zionists in renewal of drive against Jaffa records a UnitedPress account of renewed fighting, while News report titled: Haganah Push Hits Arab Area of Jerusalem covers the previous day's clash in الشيخ جراح SHEIKH JARRAH. Both inherited newspaper images remain uninspected; their claimed 26 April issue dates do not redate the actions described.3 4
Which killing does a diary place that evening?
The 27 April diary ofJohn Iliffesays a man recorded as Derham(?) was shot the previous night by guards at the Egyptian Consulate. The supplied research identifies him as Denham, but that identification is not confirmed by the inspected museum transcription. The working occurrence is 26 April evening; perpetrator attribution and spelling remain the diarist's transmitted account, not a judicial finding.5
How is this dated?
This is Day 149 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-26. The public Ivrit route is י״ז בניסן ה׳תש״ח 17th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י״ח בניסן ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route. Iliffe’s 27 April entry places the consulate shooting on the previous night,26 April; its Hebrew boundary is uncertain.
Guided reflections
- Why does assignment of portfolios not itself establish sovereignty?
- Which evidence could confirm the identity and date of the consulate shooting?
