This day of מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT joined the developments below while the English Empire still held the Mandate in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. The safety and authority of יהודים YEHUDIM, and the lives of civilians affected by fighting and displacement, were at stake.
What happened after the police withdrawal?
Imperial personnel left the police building near גשר GESHER and defenders occupied it. The Arab Legion and local armed Bedouins attacked, with fighting extending across following days. The The Arab Legion attacked a defended community. retains uncertainty over the evening opening hour and keeps later casualty and child-evacuation figures out of the 27 April daily increment.1 2
What was Parliament told about the Legion?
A written answer that day stated:
I have no evidence that the Arab Legion is assisting Arab bands in Palestine.3
The scope is assistance to irregular bands. A later consular telegram reports acknowledgment of unauthorized incidents by the imperial commander. Neither warrants a categorical claim that the answer proves no firing occurred, or that the minister knowingly lied.4
Which other positions remained contested?
At سمخ SAMAKH, the police-station history records imperial handover around 18:00 and a new attack by ההגנה HAʾHAGANA. Its account spans 27–29 April and does not securely establish the completed capture on 27 April. The Attack on سمخ SAMAKH. distinguishes that phase from the village operation four days earlier.5
The third day of the attack on יפו YAFO brought renewed fighting and reports of progress in المنشية MANSHIYA. The הארגון HAʾIRGUN attacked יפו YAFO. does not turn those claims into final capture of the city. A Reuters item datelined 27 April and printed 28 April remains an original-page access gap, rather than newly consulted confirmation.6
What civilian death was recorded in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?
Iliffe’s 27 April entry reports the killing of a consular official recorded as Commander Leggatt(?) while obtaining cash. Its attribution to Arab gunmen and suggestion of mistaken identity are diary reports, with the latter explicitly a conjecture. The original investigation and secure identification remain absent. This separate death is not a casualty of the previous night's consulate shooting.7
A meeting with a Legion representative proposed in דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION's diary for later that week is preparation, not proof that a negotiation occurred or ended these engagements.8
How is this dated?
This is Day 150 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-27. The public Ivrit route is י״ח בניסן ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708, the fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion of its daytime portion. After sunset the date is י״ט בניסן ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The rundown covers the civil day; linked studies retain their own occurrence routes and material alternatives. Source issue, dispatch, diary and later scholarship dates are identified beside the claims above. A reconstructed occurrence is not converted into an exact hour merely to fit this route. The opening attack at גשר GESHER followed a late-afternoon withdrawal and may belong to 19 Nisan; the final station capture at سمخ SAMAKH is not securely dated to 27 April.
Guided reflections
- How does the unresolved evening hour affect the Hebrew date of the Legion attack?
- Why must later losses and evacuation be excluded from the opening-day count?
