On 30 April 1948 פלמ״ח PALMAḤ held the San Simon monastery in Katamon after an overnight assault and repeated counterattacks. The fighting mattered for threatened communities of יהודים YEHUDIM in southern ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. At the same time, the campaign around יפו YAFO left a nearby village largely empty.

How did the monastery remain in the attackers’ hands?

The institutional narrative describes a crisis of mounting casualties and insufficient ammunition. Withdrawal would have required moving many wounded men under fire. Reinforcements attacking the enemy’s rear and intelligence about retreat helped the force remain. The contemporary diary records capture overnight and continuing fighting, giving an independent dated anchor for פלמ״ח PALMAḤ captured the monastery..1

The reported twenty-one dead and eighty-three wounded are institutional figures for the Fourth and Fifth Battalions in the neighborhood battle. They are not a complete civilian-and-combatant list, and the source’s name list does not fully reconcile the total.2

What did the diary’s visit to the village establish?

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION records visiting سلامة SALAMA in the evening and finding one elderly blind woman remaining. He transmits his men’s belief that most residents had already fled. The record establishes the leader’s observation and a reported explanation; it neither supplies an expulsion order for all residents nor determines the woman’s later fate.3

The visit belongs to the civilian consequences of Encirclement of יפו YAFO by ההגנה HAʾHAGANA.. Its evening timing may fall on the next Hebrew day. This is why the civil rundown’s route must not be imposed on every incident it contains.

Had neighborhood consolidation already ended?

The institutional chronology places later entry and completion on 1–2 May. The monastery victory therefore remains separate from the completion studied in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA completed control of a neighborhood.. The military achievement and the subsequent record of civilian flight and looting are both part of the public history.

How is this dated?

This is Day 153 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-04-30, using the public daytime route כ״א בניסן ה׳תש״ח 21st 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The civil slot identifies this rundown; it does not date every incident to the same Hebrew day. After sunset the local route becomes כ״ב בניסן ה׳תש״ח 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The diary supports overnight monastery capture on 30 April. Its evening village visit may cross sunset; later neighborhood consolidation belongs 1–2 May. The source roles and occurrence dates are identified beside each account and in the linked studies.4

  • What can one evening observation establish about village depopulation?
