On 1 May 1948 פלמ״ח PALMAḤ occupied بيريا BIRIYYA and عين الزيتون AYN AL-ZAYTUN, opening a new approach toward צפת ẒEFAT and relieving the isolation of a nearby settlement of יהודים YEHUDIM. The military gain was followed by expulsion of residents and the detention of village men.
What does the institutional chronology record?
The chronology dates the village captures to the morning of 1 May and explains their effect on access to the city. That account establishes the operational sequence as presented by the institution; it does not offer a complete account of civilian treatment after occupation.1
Why is expulsion the supported classification here?
The village dossier transmits later interviews describing armed men retreating while other residents stayed. After entry, troops rounded up residents, removed men and expelled the rest with shots over their heads. That identifies coerced removal of people who had remained; it is more specific than assuming that everyone fled in anticipation of combat.2
The fuller capture and expulsion study is Capture of a village and expulsion of its residents.. Responsibility belongs to the actors carrying out those actions, not automatically to every person in עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL. Protecting threatened communities does not remove the need to document what the force did to civilians.
Does capture date every later killing?
No. The published reconstruction describes selected captives probably among prisoners later massacred near the village. The exact death date and final total remain unresolved; Massacre of Arab prisoners. therefore has month-level placement. The approximately seventy victims cannot be treated as seventy independently identified prisoners from this village alone.
House demolitions are separately dated to 2–3 May. Neither demolition nor massacre should be counted as a second capture. Their consequences for nearby Arab communities and attempts to return require distinct evidence.
How is this dated?
This is Day 154 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-01, using the public daytime route כ״ב בניסן ה׳תש״ח 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. The civil slot identifies this rundown; it does not date every incident to the same Hebrew day. After sunset the local route becomes כ״ג בניסן ה׳תש״ח 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5708. Both histories assign the village capture to 1 May. Expulsion followed; the exact prisoner killing date remains unknown and demolition is dated 2–3 May. The source roles and occurrence dates are identified beside each account and in the linked studies.3
