מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL was proclaimed as the remaining גוש עציון GUŜ EẐION communities surrendered; external recognition followed.

What did the proclamation establish?

דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION publicly proclaimed מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL in תל אביב TEL AVIV. The founding act asserted sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL, opened the state to immigration and pledged equal civic rights. Its commitments remain distinct from proof of later implementation. event://5708־02־05־israel־independence־declared presents the document and its political meaning.1

What date belongs to the first official issue?

The National Library’s supplied locator identifies the first Official Gazette as 14 May. Its page viewer could not be recovered here, so the issue’s precise printing and distribution history remain unchecked. JTA’s 17 May bulletin describes a Gazette issued today, a discrepancy that requires issue comparison rather than silent correction. No 16 May first-issue event is invented.2 3

What losses accompanied the declaration?

The remaining communities in גוש עציון GUŜ EẐION surrendered and surviving defenders entered captivity. event://5708־02־05־gus־eẓyon־destroyed distinguishes this outcome from the preceding day’s massacre. In יפו YAFO, forces of ההגנה HAʾHAGANA entered as surrender arrangements were implemented, described in ההגנה HAʾHAGANA assumed control of יפו YAFO.. Those events show national authority being established amid both military gains and irretrievable losses.4 5

Which external decisions followed?

The United States recognized מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. dates de facto recognition by the United States to 18:11 Washington time, already after midnight in the homeland. The United Nations also established a mediator’s office through Resolution 186 (S-2) on 14 May. That resolution did not immediately bring a general truce, and the expiry of the Mandate at midnight remained a separate legal event.6 7

How is this dated?

This is Day 167 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-14. The register assigns its daytime public route ה׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 5th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708, a TJD fixed Hebrew calendar conversion rather than a claim that every included occurrence shared the same Hebrew day. Events after local sunset belong to ו׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 6th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. Dated diaries, document records and issue dates cited beside each section supply the reconstruction; a publication or recorded report is not automatically the occurrence date. Linked studies preserve their own timing and source conflicts.8

  • How could national sovereignty be proclaimed while a settlement bloc surrendered?
  • Why does an official issue date fail to settle its printing and distribution history?
