Mandate expiry and provisional authority preceded the opening attacks of the interstate invasion.
What changed at midnight?
English Empire rule ended, and the provisional governing arrangements of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL took effect. The public proclamation had occurred the previous afternoon. event://5708־02־06־british־mandate־ends and event://5708־02־06־israel־independence־begins distinguish legal expiry, physical withdrawal and national assumption of authority.1 2
What danger arrived with the interstate phase?
Regular Arab forces invaded ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL against the new state on several fronts. event://5708־02־06־arab־armies־invade explains the coalition’s shared opposition to sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM and its differing political and military aims. Foreign Arab forces had participated before this date, including at כפר עציון KFAR EẒʾYON; this is the interstate phase’s conventional opening, not the start of all armed conflict.
דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION’s diary records an early air attack while he broadcast, damage near the airfield, wounded people and approaching forces elsewhere. These reports expose the immediate threat to cities and communities rather than supplying an audited total for the day.3
What did the Arab League tell the United Nations?
Its communication, dated 15 May and circulated 16 May, claimed intervention would protect civilians and restore order. It also rejected partition and independent national authority by יהודים YEHUDIM. The diplomatic account establishes declared aims; it does not prove that actual attacks spared civilians.4
The new government faced national command, supplies, diplomacy and civilian protection simultaneously. Neither sovereignty nor recognition made those obligations secure. The available records leave individual casualty dates, specific evacuation decisions and the invasion’s local timetable to incident-level documentation.
How is this dated?
This is Day 168 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-15. The register assigns its daytime public route ו׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 6th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708, a TJD fixed Hebrew calendar conversion rather than a claim that every included occurrence shared the same Hebrew day. Events after local sunset belong to ז׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. Dated diaries, document records and issue dates cited beside each section supply the reconstruction; a publication or recorded report is not automatically the occurrence date. Linked studies preserve their own timing and source conflicts.5
