Provisional council presidency was filled while military emergencies and arms negotiations continued.
Which provisional office was filled?
The Provisional State Council selected חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN as its president. חיים ויצמן ḤAYIM WEIZMANN became president of the Provisional State Council. distinguishes this appointment from his election to the state presidency in 1949. Next-day reports used different labels; the Davar archive preserves the council title, while JTA’s headline uses the broader state title.1 2 3
What did the military reports reveal?
The diary describes severe fighting near the northern frontier and urgent needs in the Jordan Valley. Its report of 150 wounded from a battalion of 500 concerns information received at that stage, not a verified count of wounds sustained specifically on 16 May. Converting it into a precise daily toll would invent both individual dates and completeness.4
How were defense and withdrawal being weighed?
The diary records the evacuation of עטרות ATAROT and discussions over reinforcement or withdrawal elsewhere. Its date records when the leadership wrote about the evacuation, not an independently confirmed departure hour. Captivity, ordered evacuation and voluntary flight require their own evidence. Southern and eastern communities continued to ask for weapons and support.5
What had begun concerning the arms ship?
The diary reports an early meeting with מנחם בגין MENAḤEM BEGIN about purchase and arms arrangements involving the ship later central to the June confrontation. The May discussion establishes negotiations about funding and military authority. It does not prove that the later armed confrontation had already been decided or was inevitable.6
State institutions were working while command integration and defense remained uncertain. The council appointment belongs to that active institutional sequence, not a retrospective image of a government already safe from attack.
How is this dated?
This is Day 169 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-16. The register assigns its daytime public route ז׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708, a TJD fixed Hebrew calendar conversion rather than a claim that every included occurrence shared the same Hebrew day. Events after local sunset belong to ח׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 8th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. Dated diaries, document records and issue dates cited beside each section supply the reconstruction; a publication or recorded report is not automatically the occurrence date. Linked studies preserve their own timing and source conflicts.7
