What can civilian population figures establish?
The scholarly reconstruction describes a greatly reduced Arab population after the battle, including refugees from nearby villages among those remaining. Its estimates span the wider episode; they cannot produce a verified number displaced specifically on 17 May. A household’s flight, expulsion and later ability to return remain separate questions.3
What recognition news arrived in the evening?

How was national military authority being clarified?
The same diary records instructions that chain of command and budgetary authority now belonged to the government. Members of the earlier national headquarters were asked to continue their roles while its future corporate authority remained open. This was an actual step toward government control, not proof that every independent force had already been integrated.7
Air attacks continued as the recognition news arrived. The new state’s diplomatic standing and northern military gains strengthened its position while leaving civilian protection, military command and the war’s outcome unresolved.
How is this dated?
This is Day 170 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-17. The register assigns its daytime public route ח׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 8th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708, a TJD fixed Hebrew calendar conversion rather than a claim that every included occurrence shared the same Hebrew day. Events after local sunset belong to ט׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. Dated diaries, document records and issue dates cited beside each section supply the reconstruction; a publication or recorded report is not automatically the occurrence date. Linked studies preserve their own timing and source conflicts.8

- Why must negotiations on 17 May remain separate from the signature on 18 May?
- How do evening reception and a next-day telegram produce different valid dates?
