What ended in the Old City?
The defenders of הרובע היהודי HAʾROVA HAʾYEHUDI surrendered in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Civilians departed under the surrender arrangements and defenders were taken prisoner. The day ended a living community’s defense, with families losing homes and institutions as well as a military position. The full study is event://5708־02־19־jewish־quarter־surrenders.1 2
What do the clocks and population figures mean?
The historical study gives 16:00 in its introduction and 16:36 in its detailed signing account; the American consul transmits 18:00 through United Nations contacts. They may concern different stages, but no examined instrument resolves that. Reported civilian and prisoner numbers are estimates with different categories. Neither a later photograph caption nor a newspaper issue dated 30 May provides a checked population or moves the surrender to its publication day.3 4
What must remain distinct from this day’s loss?
The destruction of חורבה ḤURVA on 27 May is studied in The Arab Legion destroyed החורבה HAʾḤURVA.; it was not a second destruction on 28 May. The earlier breakthrough at שער ציון ŜAʾAR ẒIYON and its failure to become a durable relief corridor belong to the preceding defense. Expulsion of residents, imprisonment of defenders and subsequent denial of return are different parts of the ordeal. The scholarly interpretation of the quarter’s elimination supplies the wider account without turning every immediate estimate into a verified tally.
How is this dated?
This is Day 181 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-05-28. Its daytime Hebrew route is י״ט באייר ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. Events after local sunset belong to כ׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. This recap is an event article about the civil day, including separately labeled reports of earlier events. Newspaper issue dates and diary receipt dates do not automatically date every action. The linked event studies explain reconstructed boundaries, unresolved clocks and casualty categories. 5
Guided reflections
- How do the surrender’s prisoner provisions differ from the removal of families from their homes?
- What could establish whether 16:36 and 18:00 describe different stages of the quarter’s capitulation?
