Four Avia S-199 fighters of צה״ל ẒAHAL attacked Egyptian forces near אשדוד AŜDOD on 29 May 1948. The mission brought the new state’s fighter aircraft into combat while the invading army threatened the coastal plain. It was a hurried operation with losses and limited equipment, rather than an established air force’s routine sortie.
Who flew the mission?
The retrospective Machal account identifies Lou Lenart, מרדכי אלון MORDEHAI ALON, עזר ויצמן EZER WEIZMAN and Eddy Cohen as the pilots. It describes four aircraft, each carrying two 70 kg bombs, making repeated attacks against Egyptian forces. Antiaircraft fire struck the formation. Eddy Cohen’s aircraft crashed and he was killed; מרדכי אלון MORDEHAI ALON’s aircraft was damaged during landing.1
The same account limits the material result:
only limited damage to the Egyptians2
The mission’s importance does not require inflating the destruction it caused. The loss of a pilot and damage to scarce aircraft affected the force’s ability to fly again.
Did this air attack alone stop the invasion?
The mission formed part of a defense involving ground forces, the damaged crossing near עד הלום AD HALOM, Egyptian operational decisions and difficulties sustaining an advance. The supplied evidence does not recover Egyptian command orders showing that this raid alone caused the halt. A vivid first mission is not proof of a single-cause explanation.
The same-day diary records delays involving bombs, fuel and mechanical readiness before later preparations for the strike. That contemporary record supports the improvised conditions described by the later account, while neither source is an audited Egyptian damage assessment.3
How did this change the defense of the state?
The mission demonstrated that מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL could bring fighter aircraft against an invading column. Further raids and the failed ground assault in צה״ל ẒAHAL attacked Egyptian positions near אשדוד AŜDOD. belong to separate operations. The first sortie, a later pause in the Egyptian advance and a later failure to dislodge the column must not be merged into one victory.
How is this dated?
29 May 1948 is the supported civil date. Its daytime Hebrew conversion is כ׳ באייר ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708; an event after local sunset belongs to כ״א באייר ה׳תש״ח 21st 𝑜𝑓 Iyar, AM 5708. The Machal reconstruction calls this a daytime mission; the precise sortie time has not been verified against a flight log. Nighttime follow-up raids were separate. 4
Guided reflections
- Why can a first combat mission matter even when its physical damage was limited?
- Which Egyptian command records would test the claim that the air raid alone stopped the advance?
