The first United Nations-mediated truce in מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT began on 11 June 1948 at 06:00 GMT, or 10:00 local time. It was a four-week cessation of armed action, with limits on reinforcement and war supplies. The truce interrupted fighting; it did not settle sovereignty, remove the invading armies or guarantee that every community could obtain essentials.1

What did acceptance establish?

Secretary of State George Marshall's contemporary circular recorded:

State of Israel and Arab States have accepted cease fire order2

The mediator's 9 June record of acceptance appears in The mediator recorded acceptance of the truce proposal.. That diplomatic consent preceded implementation by two days. The distinction matters on fronts where forces were still fighting immediately before the deadline.

What did the terms prohibit?

The mediator's later progress report reproduces restrictions on reinforcement, military training of arriving men and war materials. One provision reads:

War materials shall not be imported into the country or territory of any interested party.3

The prohibition applied to the interested parties, not solely to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. The later Arms unloading was reported during the truce. examines a diary report of arms unloading during the truce. That evidence raises a concrete compliance question; the rule's existence alone neither certifies observance nor adjudicates a particular shipment.

Why did a ceasefire not end pressure on civilians?

Access to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM required food transport, road arrangements and water. The mediator's later report describes unsuccessful efforts to restore water and concludes that the withholding of water from the population of יהודים YEHUDIM was deliberate. This is the mediator's retrospective assessment of the truce period, not a finding about a new 11 June household casualty.4

Reportage published on 11 June contains relative expressions describing fighting before the deadline. Those expressions cannot make every incident a post-truce violation. A ceasefire complaint requires an event clock, the applicable time zone and an established action, rather than an issue date alone.5

What remained for supervision to determine?

Observers had to compare positions, inspect supplies and assess complaints with limited access and personnel. The decisions studied in מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL refused the proposed convoy inspection point., A truce-line ruling preserved the opposing positions. and Agreement on a neutral zone in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. show that supervision was an ongoing exercise of authority. The four-week truce was a practical framework for restraint amid unresolved invasion, civilian need and military rebuilding.

How is this dated?

The contemporary diplomatic circular expressly gives 11 June 1948 at 06:00 GMT. The historical Asia/Jerusalem time-zone record gives UTC+4, hence 10:00 local; the inherited article’s earlier ICU check independently recorded the same offset. This morning instant converts to ד׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ח 4th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708, without a sunset ambiguity. Acceptance on 9 June and later enforcement decisions remain distinct.67

Guided reflections

  • What evidence could establish compliance with an embargo beyond its formal adoption?
  • How could a ceasefire leave a civilian population exposed through denied water supplies?
