The first truce left ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM with practical shortages in power, refrigeration and transport. The June 17 diary gives a picture of sustaining civilian life while preparing forces for the next stage of the war. It records needs and assessments, not a new battle or an audited daily casualty total.

What did the city need to keep functioning?

The diary describes a shortage of electricity and ice. Food storage depended upon power as well as supplies arriving by road. These conditions affected households and public services, but the record does not establish famine or a complete siege on this date.1

How many vehicles were actually available?

The transport discussion distinguishes around one hundred vehicles associated with הראל HAREL from roughly thirty to forty available. Another figure of 130 vehicles includes around one hundred heavy vehicles. These refer to different categories and assessments; they cannot be added into one fleet or treated as a count of new deliveries today.

A vehicle on an establishment list was not necessarily fit, present or free for civilian supply work. The diary makes that gap visible without providing a complete serviceability ledger.2

When did the council discussion finish?

The record describes a council session continuing until about 01:00. That endpoint belongs to the following civil morning and must not make every statement in the session a June 18 event. Its Hebrew date had already changed after sunset. No resolution or vote absent from the source is reconstructed from the late ending.3

This day documents the state's effort to sustain the capital during an armed pause. Power, cold storage and road transport were conditions of remaining at home; none alone establishes an evacuation order or a permanent departure.

How is this dated?

The public Ivrit route uses the standard Gregorian-to-Hebrew calendar conversion; the event evidence and sunset qualification follow. This is Day 201 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-06-17. 17 June 1948 is the supported civil date. The daytime date is י׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ח 10th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708; after local sunset it is י״א בסיון ה׳תש״ח 11th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708. This is the civil-day recap. Its component sections distinguish occurrences, receipt of reports, earlier events and future plans; a register slot is not proof of every hour. 4

Guided reflections

  • Why did refrigeration depend on more than food deliveries?
  • How does vehicle availability differ from a fleet’s listed strength?
