Senior commanders of צה״ל ẒAHAL swore allegiance around noontime on 27 June 1948. At the same time, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION worked through proposed military appointments, arms purchases and negotiations concerning former personnel of הארגון HAʾIRGUN. The first truce allowed institutional consolidation while the war for the state’s survival continued.
What did the oath require?
The ceremony required loyalty to מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL and its authorized authorities, discipline and obedience to authorized commanders. The noontime diary and Ministry of Defense archival date support June 27. The later newspaper’s relative dating differs; the fuller Commanders of צה״ל ẒAHAL swore allegiance. preserves that conflict and separates wider ceremonies from this one.1 2
The public calling of officers’ actual names also marked departure from the clandestine conditions of defense under the Mandate. An oath did not dissolve the disagreement over the distribution of authority inside the new army.
Which negotiations remained open?
The diary records proposals brought on behalf of מנחם בגין MENAḤEM BEGIN: renewed enlistment, mixed commands, replacement of the former independent headquarters and release of detainees after arrangements were settled. The application to the capital was specifically raised. Presentation is the documented event; final adoption and implementation are not established that day.3
Had the arms purchases already strengthened the fronts?
The entry lists completed and incomplete purchases, shipment options and prices. Fifty 75 mmcannons were described as purchased, with departure possible in two weeks if financing allowed; additional cannons would be available later. Aircraft, tanks and ammunition had different custody and shipment states. Procurement figures cannot be entered as weapons delivered to combat units on June 27.4
The day joins allegiance, negotiation and supply preparation. Each bore upon the government's power to defend יהודים YEHUDIM, but neither a sworn undertaking nor a purchase contract proved that every command or delivery problem had been solved.

Guided reflections
- How does the oath’s secure noontime date differ from the dates of wider unit ceremonies?
- Why must purchased cannons be kept separate from cannons delivered to a front?
