On 3 July 1948, the Arab League sent its formal rejection and counterproposal to the mediator. The Committee of Five also began hearing accounts of the command crisis. The two developments concerned different sources of authority: the continued existence of sovereignty of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL and the organization of its military defense.

What political future did the Arab League propose?

The The Arab League proposed replacing מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL with a unitary state. required a unitary sovereign state. It offered minority guarantees while eliminating the separate political authority of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. The mediator’s later reply questioned both the unspecified citizenship rules and how that objective could be achieved peacefully.1

Rejection of sovereignty of עם ישראל AM YISRAʾEL is antizionism supported by this committee’s own text. Stated minority safeguards do not erase that objective. The responsibility is institutional, not automatically that of every Arab person.

What did the first hearing ask?

The documentary edition’s visible excerpt dates the first session July 3 at תל אביב TEL AVIV. Its chair framed the task as finding how to conduct the war properly. ישראל Galili YISRAʾEL described the command situation as dangerous and traced his complaint to earlier changes in authority. His retrospective account of May does not become a new Mayevent occurring July 3.2

The edition’s table of contents gives a second session that evening. The July 4 diary reports hearing the operations chief and includes an editorial correction of a repeated name. The archive's correction must remain distinguishable from the diary's transmitted wording.3 4

The partial minutes establish dates and visible statements, not every exchange or the eventual findings. They nevertheless show that discussion of defense authority continued through the truce instead of waiting until combat resumed.

How is this dated?

This is the civil-day recap for 3 July 1948, Day 217 counted inclusively from 30 November 1947. The public OTD route is כ״ו בסיון ה׳תש״ח 26th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708, the daytime Hebrew date converted from the Gregorian calendar; after local sunset it is כ״ז בסיון ה׳תש״ח 27th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708. The route dates this recap, not every earlier act recounted in its sources. 5 6

Guided reflections

  • How do stated minority rights differ from recognition of separate political sovereignty?
  • Why does testimony about a May command change remain evidence heard on July 3 rather than a new July 3 dismissal?
