On 6 July 1948, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION submitted his resignation during the command crisis, מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL decided to accept a truce extension, and a United Nations observer died in hospital. These three events have different witnesses and timing limits. The date does not collapse them into one institutional story.
What did the resignation mean?
The דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION submitted his resignation. was received before the committee finished its conclusions. The visible evening minutes reproduce its assertion of withdrawal and its demand that defense planning continue. Later compromise preserved continued service; an evening hearing alone does not fix the original letter's writing or delivery after sunset.1 2
How was the truce decision dated?
The מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL accepted an extension of the truce. is dated July 6 in the diplomatic transmission preserved by FRUS. The mediator was notified July 7; subsequent messages and formal cables were later. Political rejection and ceasefire acceptance were separate choices.3
Which observer died?
Death of René de Labarrière. follows PAL/208's timed death at approximately 17:30 in עפולה AFULA. The injury date conflicts across later reports. The 1952 UNsummary describes accidental mine detonations and no governmental international responsibility; the initial bulletin had not yet reached that conclusion.4 5
The same bulletin reports an uninjured United Nations truck driver fired on at dusk the previous day. That is a July 5 incident, not another July 6 fatality. It separately describes the observer chief's road journey blocked by fighting July 6. His detour does not establish who started the fighting.
Which civilian and political concerns remained?
In a meeting with אריה Altman ARYEH, the diary distinguishes Revisionist political opposition from הארגון HAʾIRGUN and records a demand for representation and release of detainees. It also reports youth-care figures of 13,000 children and young people, 60 percent aged 15–18. Those are a population under care, not new arrivals or army recruitment July 6. A request to investigate an earlier surrender is not a finding about responsibility.6
The day ends with state authority under strain, truce extension accepted but not yet secured from all parties, and a documented human cost of truce supervision.
How is this dated?
This is the civil-day recap for 6 July 1948, Day 220 counted inclusively from 30 November 1947. The public OTD route is כ״ט בסיון ה׳תש״ח 29th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708, the daytime Hebrew date converted from the Gregorian calendar; after local sunset it is ל׳ בסיון ה׳תש״ח 30th 𝑜𝑓 Sivan, AM 5708. The route dates this recap, not every earlier act recounted in its sources. 7 8 The resignation letter’s hour is unknown and may cross into 30 Sivan; the observer’s 17:30 death supports 29 Sivan. The truce decision hour remains unknown.
Guided reflections
- Why does the resignation letter’s evening receipt leave its Hebrew-date boundary unresolved?
- How does the later minefinding affect classification of the observer’s death?
