What ended with the first truce?

The four-week pause reached its scheduled end July 9. JTA reported observers withdrawing after extension negotiations failed. The mediator’s later official account explains the deterioration of safety and supervision. Withdrawal did not create the war anew, nor does its newspaper date establish the hour every unit resumed firing.1 2

What began on the night of July 9–10?

Operation Dani opened against the central towns and routes, under יגאל אלון YIGAL ALLON and an operational command including יצחק רבין YIẒḤAK RABIN. The military aim mattered to the capital and to the survival of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL; the large Arab civilian populations of לוד LOD and רמלה RAMLA made their treatment an immediate question. What does later reporting establish about the renewed war?

The July 11 JTA report describes Egyptian attacks, bombing and fighting in multiple places. Its military claims and estimates require corroboration; they cannot be assigned in full to July 9. The period included several fronts rather than one battle, and an offensive’s opening is not the date of every later civilian death or expulsion.5

The night's opening movements fall on 3 Tamuz, while this daily recap’s daytime route is 2 Tamuz. No complete daily casualty ledger has been established.

How is this dated?

The cited record supports 9 July 1948. Its daytime portion is ב׳ בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset it is ג׳ בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 3rd 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. This article uses ב׳ בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 2nd 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. This is the civil-day recap, not a claim that every component occurred on its daytime Hebrew date. Individual sections distinguish occurrence, orders, implementation, dispatch, publication and later testimony. Dani’s opening night of July 9–10 falls on 3 Tamuz. 6

Guided reflections

  • Which source anchors the occurrence date rather than only the date of reporting?
  • How do the day’s military and civilian developments illuminate the survival and responsibilities of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL?
