The second United Nations truce took effect on July 18, 1948, at 15:00 GMT. It ended the Ten Days of major fighting in מלחמת העצמאות MILḤEMET HAʾAẒMAʾUT (the War of Independence) without a fixed termination date. The ceasefire preserved an unsettled front: military positions, access to isolated communities and the political future of ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL remained contested.

Which record fixes the deadline?

UN mediator Folke Bernadotte’s July 16 cable specified the countrywide deadline. Its central instruction reads:

the date and hour on which the cease-fire is to be effective is 3 p. m. GMT, Sunday, 18 July 1948. 1

Resolution 54, adopted July 15, had ordered cessation of military action and left the truce in effect pending further UN action or peaceful adjustment. Adoption, notification and implementation are distinct dates. The later אלכסנדרוני ALEXANDRONI history’s claim that the second truce began July 20 conflicts with the contemporary cable and is rejected. 2 3

Had the parties accepted an extension of the first truce?

The resolution recorded that the provisional government of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL had accepted an extension in principle, whereas Arab League states had rejected successive appeals. This is the Council’s contemporary allocation of responsibility for the failed extension. It does not settle which force committed every subsequent violation. 4

The עברית IVRIT (Hebrew) morning newspaper headline retained in the earlier article announced a 19:00 local start and said that daylight had been chosen. Its issue preceded implementation. A later CIA assessment described continued sporadic fighting and violations by both sides. These records distinguish a binding deadline from perfect observance.5 6

Which fighting preceded the countrywide deadline?

The July 19 JTA dispatch reported six Egyptian air raids on תל אביב TEL AVIV the preceding day, six deaths and at least twenty injuries. It cited a direct hit on the marked Strauss Medical Center. The source reports raids before the deadline; their publication the following day does not turn them into July 19 events or prove second-truce violations. Named victims and strike times remain unverified. 7

The diary’s report on liberation of Karatiyya concerned access to the נגב NEGEV, while the Arab Legion retained the Old City and לטרון LATRUN. Neither a liberated road position nor a ceasefire guaranteed a dependable supply corridor. 8

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. Bernadotte’s July 16 cable fixes July 18 at 15:00 GMT. The inherited calendar placement is י״א בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 11th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The earlier article’s contemporary original-language witness identifies 19:00 local time and a deliberate daylight choice, supporting the pre-sunset route; after local sunset the date would be י״ב בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 12th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The Council’s July 15 adoption and the cable’s July 16 date are not the ceasefire’s start. 9 10

Guided reflections

  • How does a binding ceasefire differ from a verified end to all fighting?
  • Why must the Egyptian raids be dated by occurrence rather than the next day’s bulletin?
