דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION inspected recently liberated towns and their infrastructure while military action continued around the Little Triangle. The second truce had not resolved the government’s administrative responsibilities or the conduct of its forces.

What did the inspection reveal about civilian property?

The diary records travel through לוד LOD and רמלה RAMLA, military positions, railway material and administrative problems. Vacant property followed flight and expulsions earlier in July. Its physical emptiness cannot establish that owners had left voluntarily or surrendered title. The entry records what officials saw and discussed; each property’s legal disposition and household history need separate records. 1

When did the attack on the Little Triangle begin?

Ben-Ze’ev places bombing of عين غزال AYN GHAZAL, إجزم IJZIM and جبع JABA at approximately 19:15–20:10, followed by a ground operation around 23:00. The assault continued into July 21 and failed to secure the villages. The scholarly transcription cites military file 5942/1949, item 3. The late ground stage falls after sunset; the initial air stage may straddle the boundary. 2

These attacks preceded the main Operation שוטר ŜOTER assault of July 24. Naming every earlier strike as that operation would exceed the evidence.

What did reports of other violations establish?

JTA published ישראלי YISRAʾELI (Israeli) allegations that Syrian and Iraqi forces had violated the truce and that the army had been told to respond. The dispatch establishes the allegations and the reported order. Independent observer findings are needed to substantiate each incident, its responsible force and its occurrence time. The same evidentiary distinction applies to complaints against צה״ל ẒAHAL (the Israel Defense Forces). 3

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 234 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-20. Its daytime public route is י״ג בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 13th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew date is י״ד בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 14th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The route identifies the recap, not the occurrence date of every component. The sections distinguish occurrence from dispatch, issue date, retrospective diary report and later investigation. 4 The ground assault at approximately 23:00 July 20 continued into July 21 and falls on 14 תמוז TAMUZ; the evening air attack needs a closer sunset comparison.

Guided reflections

  • Why does vacant property fail to explain its owner’s departure?
  • Which evidence would distinguish an alleged violation from an investigated finding?
