The army’s reported manpower had grown, but transport, equipment and training still limited its ability to defend מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL. The day also carries a named commander’s memorial date and reporting about expected truce-line negotiations in the capital.
Did sixty-five thousand personnel solve the army’s shortages?
The July 21 diary records approximately 65,000 personnel in יוסף אבידר YOSEF AVIDAR’s assessment and roughly 4,500 vehicles against much larger requirements. Its transport discussion describes damage, misuse, theft between units and poor distribution. Headcount, trained personnel and usable vehicles measured different capacities. The entry also incorporates earlier figures, so it is not a single fresh census of every soldier that day. 1
How is ישראל שחורי YISRAʾEL ŜEḤORI’s death recorded?
The official memorial heads his death record July 21, 14 תמוז TAMUZ, and describes his vehicle striking a mine during inspection near the לטרון LATRUN front. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION discussed the death in the July 22 diary. The official narrative itself says the inspection occurred July 21 and describes twenty-four hours of suffering while still giving July 21 as the death date. That internal timing problem requires medical records; the memorial heading is retained provisionally rather than silently corrected. 2 3
The report names fellow officers as casualties but does not by itself provide independently reconciled person-level records for each. No Holocaust-family status is inferred.
Had commanders already signed the capital’s agreement?
JTA said commanders were expected to sign a military-line agreement. Its future tense does not establish completion. The report of signing is examined under July 22 and in Agreement defining truce lines in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM.. 4
How is this dated?
TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 235 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-21. Its daytime public route is י״ד בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 14th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew date is ט״ו בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 15th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The route identifies the recap, not the occurrence date of every component. The sections distinguish occurrence from dispatch, issue date, retrospective diary report and later investigation. 5 The memorial’s July 21 heading is provisional because its narrative also describes twenty-four hours after a July 21 mine incident.
Guided reflections
- How can a larger army still lack the practical means to hold its positions?
- Why preserve a memorial’s internal timing problem instead of guessing a corrected death date?
