Refugees of יהודים YEHUDIM reached חיפה HAIFA from Cyprus as the new state resumed industrial activity and considered settlement and defense. Their arrival also exposed the continuing power of the English Empire to separate families.

Who arrived and who remained detained?

JTA reported 820 arrivals aboard the Pan Crescent and another 600 people prevented from sailing because they could bear arms. These are distinct groups. Refugees of יהודים YEHUDIM arrived from Cyprus. examines the reported family separation and the missing passenger records. Neither number establishes every person’s wartime biography or later military service. 1

Why did the refinery matter?

The same dispatch says the Shell refinery at חיפה HAIFA reopened after more than three months and that צה״ל ẒAHAL (the Israel Defense Forces) assumed protection of the installation and oversight of its private transmitter. Fuel production mattered to transport, defense and public services. The report documents reopening, not the output achieved that day; it expressly says officials had made no accusation of transmitter misuse. 2

Where did the prime minister propose new settlement?

The diary records a meeting with יוסף ויץ YOSEF WEITZ and לוי אשכול LEVI ESHKOL and priorities around לוד LOD airport, בן שמן BEN SHEMEN and the corridor to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Discussion followed the earlier expulsions from לוד LOD and רמלה RAMLA. It records proposals, not the foundation of every projected community that day. 3

The same entry records shortages of trained defenders and proposals to rotate units for training. New residents, defended roads and functioning supplies were linked problems; immigration figures cannot be converted automatically into trained battalions. The ministerial visit carried in today’s bulletin occurred July 22.

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 237 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-23. Its daytime public route is ט״ז בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 16th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew date is י״ז בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 17th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The route identifies the recap, not the occurrence date of every component. The sections distinguish occurrence from dispatch, issue date, retrospective diary report and later investigation. 4
