The principal Operation שוטר ŜOTER assault began against three villages overlooking the coastal road during the second UN truce. The government’s need for secure communications and its obligations under the ceasefire now confronted one another in a major operation.

What forces attacked the Little Triangle?

The brigade history identifies infantry from אלכסנדרוני ALEXANDRONI, כרמלי CARMELI and גולני GOLANI, artillery, armored vehicles and air support. The first assault met strong resistance and did not immediately secure the villages. Operation שוטר ŜOTER began. follows the operation’s military character and earlier attacks. Its nighttime start belongs to the next Hebrew day even though this recap occupies the July 24 civil slot. 1

Why was it described as police action?

The brigade history says that the operation was disguised as policing because the truce was in force. This supports a deliberate choice to conceal its military character. It does not erase the recorded attacks on road traffic. The UN later found the operation unjustified and excessive, confirming forced evacuation and destruction while rejecting enormous massacre claims. 2 3

Did the fast determine the attack date?

July 24 was שבת ŜABAT (Shabbat) and י״ז בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 17th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The fast commemorating the Seventeenth of תמוז TAMUZ was postponed to Sunday, July 25. The calendar coincidence is established; no inspected evidence shows that it determined the assault or how the soldiers observed it. 4

The later UN inquiry concerns a broader series of attacks beginning with the truce, not only the principal offensive. Neither July 24 nor the operation’s name supplies a complete date for every bombardment and household departure.

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 238 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-24. Its daytime public route is י״ז בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 17th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew date is י״ח בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The route identifies the recap, not the occurrence date of every component. The sections distinguish occurrence from dispatch, issue date, retrospective diary report and later investigation. 5 The principal night assault is placed provisionally on 18 תמוז TAMUZ in its standalone study, while this civil-day recap remains on 17 תמוז TAMUZ.

Guided reflections

  • How does the institutional admission change the meaning of the police label?
  • Why should sacred-calendar coincidence remain distinct from military causation?
