Operation שוטר ŜOTER continued with bombardment and infantry fighting. Fatal ישראלי YISRAʾELI (Israeli) friendly fire struck soldiers whose individual memorial dates require careful reconciliation. The postponed fast accompanied the day, but its effect on participants is not established.

Who died from friendly fire?

The brigade history assigns nine associated deaths to its own forces. The register records eight on July 25 and יעקב מרקוביץ YAʾAKOV MARKOVITZ on July 30. Fatal friendly fire struck אלכסנדרוני ALEXANDRONI soldiers. preserves their names and the Hebrew-date discrepancy for two July 25 entries. It does not attribute these losses to Arab defenders or call them the whole day’s death toll. 1 2

What happened to the villages’ inhabitants?

Air and ground attacks endangered civilians and intensified displacement. The available records do not establish a reliable civilian death total for July 25 alone. Later UN findings confirm forced evacuation at the broader operation’s scale, while the scholarly account distinguishes armed withdrawal, civilian flight and later restrictions. Liberation of the Little Triangle. examines those findings without converting all departures into one mechanism. 3 4

What does the diary add?

The July 25 diary discusses expansion of aviation, aircraft types and personnel. These are procurement and organization proposals, not proof of completed deliveries. The decision on branch organization follows July 26. 5

The fast of the Seventeenth of תמוז TAMUZ was observed on this calendar date because its ordinary day fell on שבת ŜABAT (Shabbat). This establishes the calendrical observance, not whether particular units fasted during battle. 6

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 239 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-25. Its daytime public route is י״ח בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; after local sunset the Hebrew date is י״ט בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The route identifies the recap, not the occurrence date of every component. The sections distinguish occurrence from dispatch, issue date, retrospective diary report and later investigation. 7 Two July 25 memorial entries instead give 19 תמוז TAMUZ; the July 30 associated death is excluded from today’s deaths.

Guided reflections

  • Why must an incident roster and each soldier’s death date be recorded separately?
  • What can the calendar establish without evidence of individual observance?
