The first public צה״ל ẒAHAL parade in תל אביב TEL AVIV joined national military organization to Herzl’s death anniversary. The same civil day ended with the start of another attempt to supply נגב NEGEV.

How did the new army present itself?

The parade article compares the dated contemporary film catalog, the Defense Establishment Archive and JTA’s following-day report. Land, sea and air participation made the state’s power visible while the war continued. The estimate of nearly 100,000 spectators remains a newspaper figure. The ceremony did not create the army, and June’s commanders’ oath is a separate event. 1 2

What operation began after dark?

The GYS 1 study records an assault by גבעתי GIVATI, יפתח YIFTAH and the נגב NEGEV Brigade on Egyptian positions overnight July 27–28. The military purpose was to open a corridor for supply. Its beginning belongs to this civil day’s night, while the route of the operation is the next Hebrew day. The following morning’s failure cannot be presented as a daytime July 27 result. 3

What did the American intelligence assessment cover?

CIA assessment ORE 38-48 was issued on July 27 with information current through July 21. It assessed the military and political situation rather than witnessing all actions that day. Its combined estimate of 97,800 people includes regular forces, local defense and separate armed organizations; it is not a headcount of צה״ל ẒAHAL alone. Its discussion of violations by both sides is an assessment, not a finding on every incident. 4

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 241 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-07-27. Its daytime route is כ׳ בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 20th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; events after local sunset belong to כ״א בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 21st 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The daily recap keeps this civil-date slot distinct from each component’s occurrence, decision, death, dispatch and publication dates. The parade archive explicitly pairs July 27 with 20 תמוז TAMUZ; the GYS 1 assault began that night. 5 The linked night operation has its own next-day Hebrew route; the recap does not backdate its entire outcome to departure.

  • What does this day show about the institutions needed to defend independence?
  • How do the occurrence dates differ from the dates of the reports used here?
