Supply access and refugee detention remained immediate tests of independence. A convoy reached ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM via לטרון LATRUN, and a protest against the English Empire’s continuing detention of refugees on Cyprus was announced.

What convoy reached ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM?

JTA’s August 2 issue explicitly says the first supply convoy on the main תל אביב TEL AVIV–ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM road during the second truce arrived today via לטרון LATRUN. This is a separate movement from the GYS 2 convoy into נגב NEGEV. It did not establish reliable unrestricted access: the report also described continuing restrictions on food deliveries and the pumping station. 1

What did the Negev commander report?

נחום שריג NAḤUM ŜARIG’s briefing to דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION described inadequate communications and coordination between גבעתי GIVATI and the נגב NEGEV Brigade, exhausted settlements and too little manpower for agriculture. His estimates of about 12,000 Egyptian troops and roughly 600 effective fighters within 1,700 brigade personnel are military estimates, not audited rosters. The diary also records his allegation of coerced local labor for Egyptian fortifications; the original Egyptian and civilian records have not independently confirmed it. 2

Why did the state challenge detention on Cyprus?

The announcement article distinguishes the planned Security Council protest, a newspaper estimate of about 10,000 detainees, and the unestablished filing or release dates. The same statement’s sweeping account of Arab refugees is compared with earlier intelligence evidence, without inferring every locality’s departure mechanism. 3

The bulletin also summarized a police report released the preceding weekend. Fifteen Arab policemen reportedly guarded property in יפו YAFO; this is a reported existing arrangement, not fifteen appointments securely dated August 2.

How is this dated?

TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 247 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-08-02. Its daytime route is כ״ו בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 26th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; events after local sunset belong to כ״ז בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 27th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The daily recap keeps this civil-date slot distinct from each component’s occurrence, decision, death, dispatch and publication dates. JTA’s August 2 issue says the convoy arrived that day and the protest was announced that day; the diary dates the Negev briefing. 4

  • How do the occurrence dates differ from the dates of the reports used here?
