Military training continued while families sought news and care for prisoners held at المفرق MAFRAQ. The same day’s discussions addressed the religious courts and the equipment required for a national air force.
What training did the prime minister observe?
The July–August army was being organized to combine its arms rather than fight as isolated neighborhood formations. On August 4, דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION attended a maneuver at נתניה NETANYA involving infantry, artillery, mortars, machine guns and aircraft in a commanders’ course under חיים לסקוב ḤAYIM LASKOV. His presence and the reported exercise are established; a measured training outcome is not. 1
What did prisoners’ families seek?
The delegation article preserves requests for contact, packages, Red Cross assistance and a rabbi’s visit. Elderly Old City civilians and two unnamed girls were raised separately from military prisoners. Their identities and detention status remain unknown. A proposed exchange or visit to Arab prisoners is not recorded as implemented. 2
Which institutional and equipment discussions occurred?
At approximately 18:00, the diary records a meeting of rabbis and jurists concerning rabbinical courts. Discussion is established; enactment of a new jurisdictional law is not. The July 29 religious-arrangements article covers a different decision. 3
The August 5 diary reports that four Beaufighters arrived yesterday, giving August 4 as their reported delivery date. A fifth had crashed and a sixth was expected; neither is counted as another completed delivery. 4
JTA reported an ישראלי YISRAʾELI complaint that equipment from English Empire stores at רפיח RAFIAḤ was transferred to Egyptian forces on July 29. The August 4 complaint and the alleged July 29 transfer are separate. The next day’s reported inquiry is needed to assess the allegation. 5
How is this dated?
TJD uses the fixed Hebrew calendar for Gregorian civil-date conversion. This is Day 249 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-08-04. Its daytime route is כ״ח בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 28th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708; events after local sunset belong to כ״ט בתמוז ה׳תש״ח 29th 𝑜𝑓 Tamuz, AM 5708. The daily recap keeps this civil-date slot distinct from each component’s occurrence, decision, death, dispatch and publication dates. The August 4 diary dates the training and delegation. The August 5 aircraft report says the planes arrived the previous day. 6
