During the night of August 11–12, 1948, demolition charges destroyed the לטרון LATRUN pumping station. The day’s record also contains a UN demand for withdrawal from village positions and a dispute over continued service by seventeen-year-olds. The second truce had rules, but infrastructure and families remained exposed to military decisions.

What happened to the water station?

The expanded incident article brings together Bernadotte’s chronology, an independent American telegram and later inquiry stages. The dated records control over JTA dispatches whose relative wording implies later days. The completed UN finding attributed the violation to Arabs, possibly irregulars; it did not prove an Arab Legion command order. No directly caused death toll was recovered. 1 2

What did the village demand establish?

S/961 demanded withdrawal from positions by Ajanjul and Buweiriya acquired after the truce began, proposing unarmed return for villagers then at Bayt Nuba. The full study retains the cable’s garbled transmission and the need for its correction. The departure dates preceded this communication; no newly displaced population can be assigned to August 12. Neither an explicit expulsion order nor permanent denial of return is established. 3

Why did parents dispute continued training?

Educators challenged retention of seventeen-year-old trainees, saying families had been promised release after two months. דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION said an authorized promise of automatic release had not been made. The diary establishes competing accounts; the original advertisement and recruitment order remain missing. Legal military need and what families understood they had accepted were both at stake. 4

The entry’s Egyptian intelligence described information collected earlier and allegations about the July 14 bombing of Cairo. Those alleged casualties do not belong to August 12. No verified daily combat-death total can be extracted from that intelligence briefing.

How is this dated?

This is Day 257 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-08-12. Its daily recap route is ז׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 7th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708, the register’s daytime Hebrew conversion. Events after local sunset belong to ח׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 8th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708; the recap’s route does not assign every episode to the same Hebrew day. The Latrun destruction was during August 11–12, on 7 Av. The withdrawal deadline and parental discussion are separately dated; refugee departures predate the cable. 5

Guided reflections

  • How should investigated responsibility for sabotage differ from a newspaper’s preliminary suspicion?
  • Which original wording would decide what seventeen-year-olds and their parents had been promised?
