August 14, 1948, is the official death date of שמואל אברהם קוטר ŜMUÉL AVRAHAM KOTER, the nineteen-year-old medic missing after an הראל HAREL Brigade operation near לטרון LATRUN. The UN also appointed an inquiry into the pumping-station destruction, while the government calculated the cost of maintaining its armed forces.

What happened in the failed operation?

The Abu Lahm study describes a force sent to liberate a position and repelled by heavy Arab Legion fire. Its official retrospective investigation preserves conflicting August 13–14 operational dates. The memorial gives August 14 and ט׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708 for Koter’s death. One named death is established; ten bodies mentioned in later recovery work belong to earlier fighting, not ten additional deaths that day. 1 2

He had survived Romanian persecution and Transnistrian deportation, losing his father and other relatives. His mother died when he was four, before the Holocaust. A complete family tree was not recovered, so no last-surviving-family-member claim is made. The cost of defending restored sovereignty is visible through his own recorded life.

What investigation began at the UN?

The Central Truce Supervision Board met in חיפה HAIFA and appointed a three-person team to examine the Latrun demolition. PAL/245 dates that step to August 14. The appointment was not the inquiry’s final finding. The same release’s roughly 245 kilometers of fixed truce lines and 266 still unsettled were operational snapshots, not distances newly settled that day. 3

What did the army’s estimates mean?

The diary lists salaries, food, medical care, transport, equipment and family-support costs. Provisioning for eighty thousand people was one calculation; it cannot establish eighty thousand combat-ready soldiers. Estimated categories cannot simply be added without checking overlap or turned into audited spending. The next day’s officers’ assessment explicitly describes personnel and equipment shortages. 4

The civil day fell on שבת ŜABAT (Shabbat), ט׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708. The fast associated with that date was deferred to the following day. That observance does not resolve the contested operation’s hour or move the official memorial date.

How is this dated?

This is Day 259 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-08-14. Its daily recap route is ט׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 9th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708, the register’s daytime Hebrew conversion. Events after local sunset belong to י׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 10th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708; the recap’s route does not assign every episode to the same Hebrew day. The memorial explicitly supplies August 14/9 Av. The night-of-August-13 versus August-14 operation dispute remains open; an evening August 14 action would be 10 Av. 5

Guided reflections

  • How do the missing-person investigation’s earlier recovered bodies differ from the losses of this operation?
  • Why is a provisioning budget an unreliable substitute for a count of trained combat troops?
