On September 4, opposing forces withdrew from a defined protected area in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, and Bernadotte reported the completed inquiry into the earlier Latrun water station demolition. One was an implemented military arrangement; the other a new documentary finding about an August attack.
What withdrawal was completed?
The neutral zone withdrawal involved צה״ל ẒAHAL, Egyptian forces and the Arab Legion. UN and American records independently identify September 4. It covered Government House, the Agricultural School and the Government Arab College, not all of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. Removal of fortifications was later reported as underway. 1 2
What did the Latrun inquiry conclude?
Bernadotte’s September 4 finding attributed the Latrun demolition to Arabs, possibly irregulars, and called it a flagrant truce violation. The blast itself occurred during the night August 11–12. Its transmission on September 4 and later distribution are not a new explosion or new fatality. The original S/993 scan remains unavailable in this pass; A/648 provides the inspected summary. 3
Did these developments settle every danger?
Separate disputes over Arab Legion positions remained, and Bunche later reported renewed patrol incursions into the neutral zone. That limits a claim of permanent compliance without negating the completed withdrawal. Water along the alternative pipeline had already been reported flowing by August 13, in limited quantity; the Latrun blast had not eliminated every supply route. 4 5
No new casualty or household displacement total is established by the withdrawal or the reporting of the earlier inquiry.
How is this dated?
This is Day 280 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-09-04. The public daytime slot is ל׳ באב ה׳תש״ח 30th 𝑜𝑓 Av, AM 5708, derived by fixed Hebrew-calendar conversion. After local sunset the Hebrew date is א׳ באלול ה׳תש״ח 1st 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708; this civil-day recap does not impose its daytime route on every incident it discusses. 6
Guided reflections
- How does an implemented withdrawal differ from its earlier order?
- Why must the Latrun inquiry’s transmission date remain separate from the blast date?
