The government arrested members of לח״י LEḤI after the UN murders, while the Security Council honored the victims and the leadership received petitions about Arab residents’ rights.
What do the arrest reports count?
The diary gives changing reports during September 18, including five arrests early and forty by a later police report. They are snapshots, not additive totals. The later government return counted 266 through September 23. Arrest does not establish participation in the murders, conviction or the guilt of all members. The legal campaign continued through the September 20 regulations. 1 2
How did the UN respond?
Security Council Resolution 57, dated September 18, responded to Bernadotte’s murder by ordering flags at half-mast for three days, authorizing burial expenses and providing representation at the interment. This was a memorial decision, not sanctions against the state or adoption of the mediator’s plan. The original one-page UN reproduction was visually inspected, including its September 18 date and unanimous adoption at the 358th meeting. 3
What did residents ask of the government?
Arab petitions from נצרת NAẒRAT concerned equal rights, confiscated vehicles and the release of prisoners held without charges. The diary records a proposed committee, not completed remedies. It also raises voting rights for residents of יפו YAFO. These requests show concrete civic questions under state authority; no restitution or prisoner-release outcome is established. 4
Which overseas incident was reported later?
The September 20 diary reports alleged early-morning September 18 sabotage at an Italian airfield involving four Macchi C.205 aircraft and three smaller planes. The entry attributes it to two Israeli operatives. Italian records and the operatives’ reports remain unchecked, so this is a contemporaneous report of an allegation, not an independently established aircraft-loss total. 5
How is this dated?
This is Day 294 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1948-09-18. The daily OTD route י״ד באלול ה׳תש״ח 14th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708 is its fixed Hebrew-calendar daytime conversion. Individual actions after sunset belong to ט״ו באלול ה׳תש״ח 15th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708, independently of this civil-day recap. 6 The alleged Italian operation is assigned September 18 by the September 20 diary; the original Resolution 57 page confirms its own September 18 date.
